A Poem for Thought...

Sat May 23, 2009, 6:49 AM
Rather than rant on about the way the world is at the moment, I thought I would share with you all this poem instead. It is by one of my favourite writers, Kenneth Koch, who is sadly no longer with us any more. Still, it pretty much sums up everything I want to say. Enjoy :D

You want a social life, with friends, by KENNETH KOCH

You want a social life, with friends,
A passionate love life and as well
To work hard every day. What's true
Is of these three you may have two
And two can pay you dividends
But never may have three.

There isn't time enough, my friends--
Though dawn begins, yet midnight ends--
To find the time to have love, work, and friends.
Michelangelo had feeling
For Vittoria and the Ceiling
But did he go to parties at day's end?

Homer nightly went to banquets
Wrote all day but had no lockets
Bright with pictures of his Girl.
I know one who loves and parties
And has done so since his thirties
But writes hardly a thing at all.

Oh... it's true. That's why I can't find love.

Well...there are sometimes ways to combine the three...especially if you can work hard at something you love or with someone you love. For me, my "love life" and "working hard" are one thing (cause I love reading and writing and only get crushes on guys who don't exist. *grin*)

Thanks for sharing, it's a lovely poem, and it is often very true. You can't have your cake and eat it too...something has to give.
